The ASWB clinical is one of the four licensing examinations conducted by Association of Social Work Board (ASWB). It is for the licensing of social workers in United States and Canada. ASWB is a non-profit organization of social work licensing boards. It is important to remind that ASWB is not associated with National Association of Social Workers (NASW) in any way.
The ASWB exam is taken by the candidates interested in becoming licensed social worker. This test is taken by the candidates who have done Masters of Social Work (MSW) and have at least two years of post degree experience in direct clinical practice settings.
There are 11 sections in the exam- “Human development and behavior”, “Diagnosis and assessment”, “Communication”, “Professional values and ethics”, “Practice evaluation and the application of research”, “Clinical practice and research”, “Issues of diversity”, “Psychotherapy and clinical practice”, “Therapeutic relationship”, “Clinical supervision, consultation and staff development”, and “Service delivery”. There are 170 multiple choice questions in the test.
The test is normally administered in computer based testing. It may be offered in paper and pencil format provided that the examinee has any kind of disability, due to which he/she can not take the exam on computer. The time for administering the exam is 4 hours. There are no breaks while the exam. The reason for keeping no breaks while test administration is the argument that ASWB consists of MCQs which are relatively of short length. There can be extra time given to some of the candidates who have some kind of disability or if English is their second language. However, this is in the hands of the testing center.
Out of 170 items, 150 are scored and 20 are not scored. The not scored questions are indistinguishable and are placed for future administration of the exam. The raw score is proportional to the number of questions answered correctly. There is no negative marking. The examinee has to answer 94 to 107 MCQs correctly for clearing this licensing exam.
There are no fixed dates for conducting ASWB exam. The candidate has to make an appointment at the test site for taking the exam. The appointment can be made only after getting permission from the state or provincial licensing board and registering through phone or online. The applicant gets the appointment at a Pearson-Vue center in 24 hours after registration. The appointments are given on a first come, first serve basis. The number of allowed retests depends on the testing center.
The registration fee of ASWB clinical exam is $260. A payment of $30 is charged for change of registration. The applicants can also buy printed study guide and online practice tests on a payment of $30 and $75 respectively.
